We cannot let autocratic despots think they can invade neighboring autonomous Democratic countries at will. If we do, then there’s no reason for them to stop. That’s why we must stand up for Ukraine (and Taiwan if need be) with military assistance but minus boots on the ground. I don’t think Putin will use nuclear weapons as things now stand, otherwise he would be a pariah globally. But we must also do whatever we can to help those within Russia who want to see him overthrown.
Invading autonomous countries is something the United States knows something about. You don’t think nuclear weapons will be used? What if you think wrong. With nuclear war there’s no plan B.
There’s no comparison with what Russia did, an autocracy controlled by a dictator invading a freely elected democracy and anything the US might have done in modern times. Yes, nuclear weapons are a concern but if Russia were allowed to even gain a partial victory in Ukraine, that would send the message that if you have nuclear you can actually get away with acting like a Hitler or a Genghis Khan. China and N. Korea (and maybe eventually Iran) will be taking note.
You divert. The point of this post is that none of this was debated or discussed in this election. In a democracy whether we go to war or pursue peace should be a subject of public debate.
Right now with how we are helping Ukraine, there doesn’t seem to be much opposition. Nobody likes Putin and they clearly see he is the cause of this war and they rightly blame him for why we are paying more for gas. The nuclear issue is worrisome, I’m worried about it, but people see that Russia is losing, it’s far away, American lives are not being lost so everyone is hopeful for the best.
As I understand it, the elections have become a referendum on abortion. I think it's depressing.
