Great column, Fred, as always. There is one man who can stop the war in Ukraine. His name is Vladimir Putin. He refuses to negotiate or de-escalate. He rains death on people, cities, villages, towns, hospitals, schools. If Zelensky and the Ukrainians stop, do you think Putin will?

Since Zelensky has long committed to peace negotiations, there are now two men who can end it — Putin & Biden. But for both, the war is about much more than Ukraine. Putin wants to reclaim greater Russia. Biden and his Cold War advisers want the war to “weaken” Russia. Their eye remains on China.

Thanks Diane. If this war is winnable by either the Ukrainians or the Russians (which I doubt) the cost will be unimaginable. To just call on NATO to continue sending arms without calling for talks, for negotiations, means more death and destruction. We know that negotiating is a process and takes place at many levels. Front door. At the table. Back door. Third parties. We know that negotiating works. Endless war is not an option. I reject the chicken hawks who only see beating the Russians on the battlefield no matter what the price.

As long as it isn't them doing the fighting.
