Most people seem overwhelmingly sympathetic to Ukraine. I think they see parallels to something their families may have experience in the old country, Genocide, colonialism, religious persecution, etc. That's going to be all they will see.
Some will be sympathetic to the Russian cause. I believe there was a pan-slavic ideology being promoted in Russia, at one point. I suspect it has never gone away.
As for the letter, I would take it as a sign the the liberal democrats had gotten a little out of touch.
I would say that if Ukraine were to make any significant concessions, in terms of there own territory, to Russia, this war will continue but with Russia and other countries. Putin should not be rewarded for his unconscionable invasion of a neighboring sovereign country. And if he is, trust me, other than expansionist autocracies will take notice (read China).
We should only negotiate if Ukraine is at the point of recovering all of their territory. Then we should allow Russia to withdrawal peacefully.
Besides Chuck, you already said in previous comments that this war is to overthrow Putin. I doubt that will ever be a bargaining point. But it does undermine anything you have to say about talks to end the war.
