In a desperate attempt to salvage his failing do-over of a New York mayoral campaign, disgraced former governor Andrew Cuomo has launched what has too be considered an unhinged attack on the idea of stabilized housing.
The millionaire governor’s claim that the salary of a New York state assemblyman makes him too rich to qualify for the city’s stabilized rental program has real negative implications for New York renters.
Cuomo, who moved into a New York City $7000 apartment belonging to his daughter just in time to qualify as a resident for the election, purposefully confuses two of New York City’s rental programs: Rent control and rent stabilized.
In a cynical campaign move, Cuomo promises to institute a law which would lower the cap on those working class families who can qualify for stanilized housing.
It is important to understand that the rent stabilized program doesn’t just protect renters from unfair rent hikes. It also functions as a kind of renters’ bill of rights on a whole range of rental issues.
Such a law would eliminate thousands of working and middle class renters from the city’s rental protections.
Zohran Mamdani wants to freeze the rent on stabilized rentals.
Cuomo’s plan is literally the opposite of a rent freeze.
Meanwhile further south, Cuomo’s pen pal, Donald Trump, is calling out the national guard and the FBI to go after a non-existent crime wave.
Like most big cities, the Capital has witnessed a sharp decline in violent crime.
His target is the city’s homeless population, over 80% of which are Black.
Trump has promised to “move them somewhere else”.
Isn’t that the same thing he promised to do to the Palestinians in Gaza?
