Was Harris' "I am speaking" her Sister Souljah Moment?
Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza remains a thorn in the side of the Democrats as they try to overtake Trump.
Those of us who oppose U.S. support for Israel and the lunatic Netanyahu launched a campaign in the primaries to send uncommitted delegates to the DNC in a rebuke of the Biden doctrine of full support for the genocidal war.
Biden won the primaries unopposed and was on his way to the nomination, but the uncommitted campaign served to weaken him.
It also made the nomination of pro-war Pennsylvania’s Josh Shaprio more difficult.
Tim Walz has a long record of support for Israel but has expressed reservations about the current war.
But it seems that the brains in the Harris/Walz campaign headquarters are worried about the MAGAs attempts at making them appear far more Left and radical than they really, really are.
Which brings to a bit of presidential campaign history: Bill Clinton’s Sister Souljah Moment in 1992.
Clinton was, of course, the ultimate Slick Willie. He was the quintessential Democratic centrist for whom there was no political principal or group he was unwilling to betray in order to get elected or stay in office.
While the Black vote was at the heart of Clinton’s electoral base, there was concern that he would be viewed by some white swing voters as being “too Black.” The campaign decided to make Reverend Jesse Jackson their fall guy and used a Sister Souljah Moment to do it. Sister Souljah was a hip-hop artist and activist who targeted white supremacy in her music.
At an Operation Push meeting Clinton openly and strategically criticized Jackson and compared Sister Souljah to Klansman David Duke.
It was front-page news and a “Sister Souljah Moment” became part of the electoral lexicon.
When Gaza protesters interrupted Vice President Kamala Harris at a rally in Detroit on Wednesday evening, she smiled, and saw her moment
She reacted as if scripted, “I am speaking now.”
But as the chants for peace continued, the smile turned into a frown. “You know what?” Ms. Harris said, “If you want Donald Trump to win, then say that. Otherwise, I’m speaking.”
What nonsense.
The truth is that were it not for the large percentage of voters who oppose U.S. support for Israel, Biden would still be the nominee or Josh Shapiro would be the choice for vice president.
And Kamila would likely be the loser as Biden’s partner in November.
In fact, the Harris/Walz campaign has said very little - nothing actually - about Israel or Gaza.
Every faction of the Democratic Party has been allowed to project on them whatever views they already hold.
But if Harris is speaking, she ought to say something about Gaza.
