Trump’s latest Executive Order goes after public schools.
I would have expected nothing less.
We have been coming down to Florida for a few weeks each winter for a number of years. As a result, we have been able to get a preview of the Trump plans for public schools in the form of Florida governor Ron DeSantis.
Florida is also the headquarters of Moms for Liberty, an astro-turf right-wing billionaire-funded organization whose intention is to end what they call “government schools.”
Although nothing says big government (make it Big Brother) more than Trump’s education EO.
A few years ago, DeSantis had already signed a bill to ban transgender athletes from women’s and girls’ public school teams and banned more than 40 percent of math textbooks that publishers submitted for review, which he said contained “woke” ideology.
DeSantis’ Parental Rights in Education Act took effect in July 2022, which he falsely claimed was an effort to give parents more control over what their children learn at school.
It was widely derided as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill .
Earlier in his first term, he passed a bill that allowed more teachers to be armed at school in response to the Parkland shooting.
Florida’s Individual Freedom Act, colloquially known as the Stop WOKE Act, took effect in July 2022 to also falsely clamed it would “prevent discrimination in the workplace and public schools,” according to the text, but has caused confusion for educators who describe “walking on eggshells” in their classrooms so as to not violate the law.
As a result of the racist and homophobic attacks on curriculum, interference in classroom best practices plus low pay, Florida teachers are leaving the state in droves.
DeSantis’ attack on public schools may also be a reason why Floridians are abandoning the state in record numbers.
But if the Moms for Liberty, DeSantis, Trump plan for public education is adopted nationally, there will be nowhere to run to.
Another factor creating a “brain drain” is the state’s laws regarding women’s health care & abortion. It’s the parents & students number 1 consideration in choosing a college/university to apply. So the higher education schools are being hit hard, especially hitting the southern states the worse. So not only are teachers leaving in droves so are students
