The war party passes a military funding bill. Nearly all the Democrats and half the GOP unite.
Some days it appears that the country is hopelessly divided and the two major parties are at war with little hope for compromise.
Yesterday, however, the country saw nearly all the Senate Democrats and nearly half the Senate Republicans unite.
That was not good news in my opinion. It was not the kind of unity we need.
What they united over was a $95 billion dollar war funding bill for the wars in Ukraine, Gaza and to threaten China in the South China Sea.
The 70-29 vote took place shortly after 5 a.m., following an all-night filibuster by die-hard MAGA isolationists who objected to the bill.
But the opposite of isolationism isn’t peace.
The opposite of isolationism in this case is continuing a bloody proxy war in Ukraine, genocide in Gaza and the West Bank and increasing tensions with China.
Twenty-two Republicans led by Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell voted with the overwhelming majority of Senate Democrats to pass the bill.
Only two Democrats — Sens. Jeff Merkley of Oregon and Peter Welch of Vermont — voted no.
Both spoke of their opposition to Israel’s war on Gaza.
Sen. Bernie Sanders , not officially a Democrat, also voted against the bill for the same reason.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer , Democrat from New York, hailed the bill as a declaration that “American leadership will not waver, not falter, not fail.”
Jeez.
