I was glued to the January 6th show yesterday.
As my daughter posted on Facebook yesterday, it was pretty juicy stuff.
Thanks to the testimony of Cassidy Hutchinson we got to hear not only about Trump throwing plates, her cleaning ketchup off the White House staff dining room walls, and Trump reaching to choke his own Secret Service guy, but how close we came to an old fashion coup d’etat with Proud Boys as the the armed royal guard and Trump personally leading the armed assault.
There was the video of Trumper, General Michael Flynn, taking the fifth when asked if he believes in the peaceful transfer of power.
“They’re not here to hurt me,” Hutchinson quoted Trump as saying in what was a monster understatement, referring the the snipers with AR15s in the trees on the ellipse.
The coup attempt is not over.
Yes, the hearings are juicy indeed.
But it’s not just a TV show.
It demonstrates how fragile our very flawed democracy is.
Speaking of flawed democracy, there was an election in Chicago and Illinois yesterday.
Barely anybody showed. Less than 20% voted in Chicago.
On the Democratic Party primary side most of the statewide offices are held by Democrats who ran unopposed.
The statewide action was on the Republican side where Trumpers did well.
The guy Trump backed to run against Democrat JB Pritzker, Darren Bailey, won by a mile.
Since the Democrats think he will be the easiest to beat, the Democratic Governors’ Association bought $35 million in TV ads for Bailey.
I think that is a dangerous game.
It was interesting that the so-called Republican moderate who was funded by billionaire Ken Griffin got trounced, came in third.
Griffin, CEO of Citadel, a mega hedge fund company, has formally moved to Florida next to Mar-a-Lago. He has been a player in Chicago and Illinois politics for years, a pal to former Mayor Rahm Emanuel and funder to business oriented Democrats and Republicans.
Two years ago he dropped fifty million dollars to defeat a constitutional change that would end the state’s regressive tax laws that favor him and his friends.
He left town, complaining about Chicago’s criminal activity.
He wasn’t referring to his own.
Illinois Republicans, who once were fairly competitive in the state, have now been reduced to a sect.
Of course they can still manage to elect someone like Bruce Rauner as governor now and then, so they are not to be discounted.
And they did elect Mary Miller to Congress.
She’s our Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Last week she called the Supreme Court decision to outlaw abortions a victory for “white life.”
And she has been known to quote Adolph Hitler approvingly.
So, there’s that.
