The long and winding road. Justice for Chicago's alderman Eddie Burke.
"Swift" is not a word one uses when we talk about justice in this case.
Chicago’s long serving corrupt alderman, Eddie Burke, is the poster boy for what wrong with the bail system.
I mean he’s the poster boy for lots of shitty things, but let’s talk about bail for a second.
Poor people accused of a crime but haven’t been convicted of anything go to jail if they can’t afford bail.
Rich people? Powerful people? Eddie Burke kind of people?
Indicted by the feds three years ago, Burke has been free on $10,000 unsecured bail, continuing to sit and vote in city council and avoid a trial that could send him to the federal pen for twenty years.
The dude is 78, so in the unlikely chance he actually gets sentenced to the full ride, he likely won’t come out.
But that’s not going to happen.
You have to figure that there are a whole lot of poor folks sitting in Cook County jail and the federal detention center who are going “what the fuck?”
You can read the background on the charges against Burke here.
Finally after three years, U.S. District Judge Robert Dow set the trial date during a status hearing on Tuesday.
The trial date is set for November 6, 2023.
Burke was indicted in January of 2019.
It will be almost four years between his indictment and trial date.
If then.
By the way, Chicago’s next municipal election is set for February, 2023.
Burke could run and be elected.
