What actually happened in Russia this past weekend is hard to figure out.
It’s too soon.
Even the current story that the leader of the coup attempt and of the fascist Wagner Group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, has been given negotiated exile in Belarus, will likely not be the end of it.
These things take time to fully play out.
For example, take our own coup attempt on January 6th 2021.
Whatever happened to the results of the so-called bipartisan Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol?
Every session was televised live.
Does anyone remember it?
Donald Trump, the leader of our coup attempt is indicted, but not for his role in overturning the election.
We keep hearing about an indictment for interfering in Georgia’s election count, but nothing so far.
And even that is not about his active role in leading the coup attempt on January 6th.
And the guy’s running again and likely to be the MAGA Party nominee.
A majority of the controlling Party in Congress is made up of supporters of the insurrection. And are free.
A veteran member of the United States Supreme Court is married to a coup conspirator. And is free.
The lawyers and advisors who aided Trump in the coup conspiracy remain free.
And then there are the organized groups, the foot soldiers of the coup like the Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers.
Sure. A few patsies and fall guys have received jail time.
Even Trump’s leading challenger, Ron DeSantis, has promised them pardons if he is elected.
Those groups and other white supremacist organizations are still out there free to do their organizing.
It seems like the final stories of both the Russian coup and ours are still to be told with no guarantees of how the stories will play out.
