Russia and Ukraine resumed peace talks on Monday. But the numbers of dead keep growing.
News from the war is that there will be peace talks today, Monday, but also that the killing continues and the dead bodies continue to pile up.
Of course they do. There are no bloodless wars. War is dead bodies piling up.
I posted on Facebook yesterday about my Dad who died twenty years ago. He would have been 104 today.
My father lived a more than an ordinary life which included volunteering as a teenager to fight in the Abraham Lincoln Brigade against the fascist Franco in Spain.
Dad saw battle again against fascism on the ground in World War 2 in the battle of Okinawa.
Okinawa was one of the bloodiest battles of the war in the Pacific.
He was involved in hand-to-hand combat in two wars five years apart.
I can’t imagine.
Some fool commented on my Facebook page that he knew what my Dad would be saying about the current war in Ukraine.
What hubris to put his words in the mouth of my dead father who saw more war close up than any of today’s Facebook soldiers.
I told him to delete it or I would. And block him.
He refused. I kept my word.
I hear from those who tell me how this is a war between democracy and tyranny.
Of course every war is described the same way.
Why would anyone take up a gun in a war if they thought it was just about Big Powers fighting over global hegemony?
Some say they want to volunteer to fight like Dad did.
They won’t. It’s all bullshit and bluster.
Better to leave it to Russians and Ukrainians to do the fighting for them.
Anyway, it’s not Spain.
The talks will go on and the killing will eventually slow down though the tragedy of it will last for decades.
