Republican and Democratic Party plans to privatize Medicare.
Bad news from both sides of the aisle.
Medicare as it was intended is under threat by both Republicans and Democrats.
You might say that Republicans are for getting rid of it through the front door.
Democrats are moving to privatize it through the back door.
The results will be the same.
It will mean the end to Medicare as we know it precisely at a time when public access to affordable medical care is more needed than ever.
Democrats will tell you that it is Republicans like Florida’s Senator Rick Scott that want to “sunset” Medicare.
They are not wrong.
Senator Scott has an 11 point plan to “rescue America”. Buried on page 19 of the 31-page pdf of the plan is a very significant promise.
The plan includes this promise:
“All federal legislation sunsets in 5 years. If a law is worth keeping, Congress can pass it again.”
Now among the many federal laws on the books is the Social Security Act. Originally passed in 1935 to create Unemployment Insurance, Aid to Dependent Children (cash welfare for widows and orphans --- later extended to cover all poor single women with children renamed Aid to Families with Dependent Children [AFDC]), and Old Age and Survivors Pensions.
Now we call that Social Security.
Scott’s rescue plan would end Medicare and the Social Security Pensions that almost all Americans over 70 are receiving monthly.
Could this pass Congress.
Last week I would be doubtful.
But a Republican congress in 2023 and a Republican President in 2024?
Jailing women for ending a pregnancy could be just the beginning.
But Democrats have their own plan of ending public Medicare as we know it.
I call it the back door plan.
It is to move all Medicare recipients to a Medicare Advantage-like plan, with or without our consent by the end of the decade.
Remember. Medicare Advantage is a for-profit, private insurance plan.
The Democrats plan would end our ability to choose pay-for-service medical coverage.
Front door or back door.
Both stink.
