Pritzker vows to sign school voucher extension.
I think it’s a betrayal.
It's at least a broken promise.
Governor Pritzker has reversed the position he took when running for office to oppose any school voucher program.
Pritzker now promises to sign any voucher bill that the Democratic legislature passes and ends up on his desk.
The misnamed Invest in Kids program was ready to die when the legislature failed to extend it in the regular session this year.
Invest in Kids allows people and corporations to donate funds for private school scholarships and in return get a 75% income tax credit, capped at $1 million. The maximum allowed in total annual contributions is $75 million.
So, it’s actually a Disinvest in Public Schools program.
It takes tax money that should go to public schools and in exchange wealthy donors to parochial schools and corporate private schools get a whopping tax break.
“I will support it if it comes to my desk to extend the program in whatever form,” Pritzker said during a ribbon-cutting event for the Chabad Center for Jewish Life and Living at the University of Illinois campus. “I mean, I can’t imagine it would show up in some form that I would be unwilling to (sign it).”
When Pritzker ran in 2018, he vowed to repeal the program, which was the result of legislation passed the previous year under his predecessor, Republican Bruce Rauner.
But after he was elected in 2019, Pritzker approved a legislative initiative that extended Invest in Kids for a year beyond its original sunset date and expanded it to private trade schools.
Of course, if the Democrats in the General Assembly kill the bill there will be nothing for JB to sign.
