MAGAs kill House bill that would have repealed WEP/GPO.
When I retired from teaching over 12 years ago I was barred by federal laws from collecting my full Social Security benefit that I had earned from jobs I held for 20 years before becoming a teacher.
The laws, the windfall elimination provision (WEP) and government pension offset (GPO), reduced my Social Security benefit by two-thirds or by roughly $800 a month.
The law impacts teachers and others in states like Illinois who receive a public pension and don’t pay into Social Security while working as a teacher.
Just after the election of Donald Trump GOP lawmakers killed a bill that would have repealed the two federal laws.
The bills were brought forward by House Reps. Garret Graves, (R-LA) and Abigail Spanberger (D-VA).
Despite the bill previously having a wide range of bi-partisan support and Graves and Spanberger securing the 218 signatures needed to bring the law to the House floor, the Freedom Caucus blocked the bill on its path to being passed.
Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Harris (R-MD) got unanimous consent to lay the Social Security bill on the table killing it.
Teachers have been trying to get the bill repealing the WEP/GPO passed for years.
It always seem to have enough members of Congress to pass it, but it would never be brought to the House floor for a vote.
Welcome to a preview of the second Trump administration.
