Leaving it to Marjorie Taylor Green to be the voice for ending the war in Ukraine? We should be the ones calling for peace. It is our tradition.
I have been an anti-war activist since as a teenager I helped organized a ban the bomb march of hundreds of high school students in Los Angeles in 1964.
So my view that the proxy war in Ukraine must quickly end with peace talks and a negotiated solution is totally consistent with my lifetime of organizing.
It is not only personally consistent, but it is consistent with the position of progressives and the Left. We have always been the the voice for peace.
Until now.
I say it is a proxy war because of the huge U.S. involvement. The U.S. involvement is intended to weaken Russia at the expense of the people of Ukraine.
The U.S. is not the good guy in all this.
In the past, to be anti-war was to be attacked by the Right as being pro-Russia and a communist.
In an ironic twist, now those of us who argue for a negotiated settlement to the war in Ukraine are called pro-Russian by the pro-war section of the Left, just like we were in the past by the far right-wing.
It’s quite a switch.
Or worse, we are compared to the looney Marjorie Taylor Green and the Putin-loving MAGAs.
Some of our critics argue that talks are impossible until Russia has been defeated.
Zelensky even argues that the war can’t end until Russia is driven out of Crimea.
An unlikely prospect. Particularly in light of the failed so-called Spring Counter Offensive.
But that still seems to be current U.S. policy.
And if it is pursued it dangerously increases the threat of global nuclear war.
