Actor Cynthia Nixon held a fundraiser for New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani at her place in Manhattan the other night.
We snagged a couple of invitations in exchange for a modest donation.
Of course, Mamdani’s campaign has been fueled by modest donations. He’s raised the most money of any candidate and raised it from the largest number of donors.
Cynthia Nixon is not only a fine actress and star of tv, film and stage. She is a committed progressive even having thrown her hat in the ring to run against then Governor Andrew Cuomo.
That was before he was forced to resign after reports of corruption and sexual harassment of women emerged. The stories included unwanted groping, kissing and sexually explicit comments.
Cuomo is now trying to salvage his legacy by running for mayor of New York.
But enough about Cuomo.
The Mamdani campaign is a phenomenon.
He had come out of nowhere as a Queens assemblyman to be a serious challenge to the political establishment with a focus on the city’s lack of affordability for working families and a fiery response to the assault on our cities by the Trump gang.
He would also be the first Muslim mayor of New York.
We got to Cynthia Nixon’s house and the line to get in stretched down the block.
We were greeted at the door by Cynthia and her spouse, Christine Marinoni.
The place was packed and I was thinking to myself how the Mamdani campaign couldn't have come at a better time. The election of Trump and the weeks that have followed have been demoralizing for many.
He’s a perfect candidate for the moment. Unafraid, progressive and a charismatic personality.
There is real excitement about this guy. As his poll numbers have gone up along with his small dollar donations, the press is starting to pay attention.
He got a two page spread in this week’s New York Magazine.
His frequent social media posts have a huge following and they are well produced. And frequently funny.
He campaigns around stopping rent increases, free bus service, grocery prices and free childcare.
But he’s not afraid to confront issues like the abduction of Palestinian Columbia student Mahmoud Khalil.
And confront so-called “border czar” Tom Homan.

Talking with his campaign manager, she told me that they have 6,000 volunteers out on the streets with 200 a day now signing up.
I’m telling you, something is happening here.
How nice that you have a candidate to be excited about. I hope he prevails!
