My art is on Instagram @klonskyart.
I’m writing this early Wednesday morning, the day after election day.
As of now, the control of Congress is still undecided because they are still counting votes. I imagine there will be recounts.
In Georgia, Rev. Raphael Warnock is up by a 5,000 votes over Herschel Walker but shy of the 50% to avoid a runoff next month.
It’s over in Pennsylvania with wins by John Fetterman beating MAGA Dr. Oz for the Senate and Josh Shapiro beating the fascist Doug Mastriano for Governor.
My home town of Philly gave them both over 80% of their votes.
For weeks we have been hearing about the Red Tsunami. In spite of an unpopular president, historic inflation and billions of dollars on an endless war, voters turned out in record numbers and confounded the polls and pundits.
Instead, some have called it a pink tinkle.
Michael Moore, who was predicting this for weeks, wrote this morning,
And that is where we are at as America wakes up on The Day After. As Election Day 2022 came to an end, the Republicans last night were in a state of shock as they found themselves, at least for now, in control of neither the House nor the Senate! They were unable to throw a single Democrat out of the United States Senate. In fact just the opposite happened — the Democrats were able to flip control of their Pennsylvania Senate seat from a Republican to a Democrat. In stunned disbelief, the Democrats instantly went from a 50-50 Senate to a 51-49 Senate in their favor. Georgia and Nevada are still too close to call, but the Democrat in Georgia holds a small lead, and the Democrat in Nevada has played see-saw all night with the Republican. To be clear, they’ll be counting these votes for days, if not weeks, and so it’s anybody’s guess what could happen.
As for the House, you need 218 seats to hold a majority, to be able to pass (or defeat) a bill. Right now they are 20 seats short of that and that is why none of the networks nor the AP nor the New York Times have called the House for either Party.
Closer to home, Illinois remains a deeply blue state.
The vote on the Workers Rights amendment to the Illinois constitution passed and we are now constitutionally guaranteed the right to collective bargaining.
The Illinois Supreme Court remains with a pro-reproductive rights majority.
I have been closely watching the senate race across the border in Wisconsin between MAGA Ron Johnson and Democrat Mandela Barnes. With 99% reporting Barnes is a couple thousand votes behind.
Sadly.
A big loser last night besides the polls and the pundits was the right-wing pro-Israel AIPAC (the American Israel Public Affairs Committee).
As were the anti-Semites who funded Doug Mastriano’s racist campaign against Josh Shapiro. Mastriano reportedly took a busload of people to Washington on January 6 prior to the insurrection at the Capitol, compared gun control to 1930s Nazi policy and shared an image saying legal abortion was worse than the Holocaust.
Democrat Summer Lee is projected to defeat MAGA Mike Doyle in their battle for Pennsylvania’s 12th Congressional District, despite AIPAC spending over $1 million in recent days to defeat her.
Sadly, Ron DeSantis won easily in Florida and Greg Abbott beat Beto in Texas by double digits.
But it could have been so much worse.
IL stays 💙, & the IL Workers' Rights Amendment passed!!!
Also--gotta love Fetterman & family.
I read, somewhere, that his wife made him PROMISE (that's how the piece read) that he would wear a suit at his one & only debate. When he spoke last night, rather than being dressed to the nines, both he & family appeared in sweats.
& Gisele Fetterman likes to sign her communications
"Gisele Beretto (sp.-?) Fetterman
SLOP"
(acronym for "Second Lady of Pennsylvania")
Omigosh, just saw/heard on the news that the Workers' Rights Amendment is not, in fact, a done deal (still counting & some other criteria).
