Is UFT President Mulgrew or Mayor Adams smarter than an eighth grader? Apparently not.
Happy Halloween to everyone.
And congratulations to my Los Angeles Dodgers who beat the hated Yankees last night to clinch the World Series in a crazy but totally entertaining come from behind victory in the fifth game.
My namesake Freddie Freeman will go down in baseball history for his first ever in a World Series lead off grand slam in the first game.
If there’s a baseball heaven, The Boys of Summer are smiling down.
Meanwhile here in my new home of New York there is a lot of crazy.
When the new school calendar was announced every teacher I talked to pointed out how stupid it was.
The negotiated calendar had the Monday of winter break as a teacher and student attendance day.
Even if you have never been in a school or had kids in school or drove by a school or went to school you can see the problem here.
It has teachers and students scheduled for a Monday and off for the rest of the week.
You see it, right?
Isaac, who attends Intermediate School 96 Seth Low in Bensonhurst, launched a petition to fix the school calendar, saying few of his classmates will show up for school that day. By the time of the announcement the petition had about 23,000 signatures.
But teacher union president Michael Mulgrew missed it.
Or didn’t care.
And New York’s indicted Mayor Adams missed it.
Or was clueless.
I’m thinking Isaac would do a better job representing folks than the union president or the Mayor.
Of course, there are bigger problems with the union leadership and the mayor than one school day.
However, I see it as a metaphor.
And as my friend and fellow retired teacher, Arthur Goldstein points out, it is just the tip of the iceberg.
