My art is on Instagram @klonskyart.
It is over a week since the election and we still don’t know the final count of who won how many House seats.
But the poor showing of Trump-backed MAGA candidates is undeniable.
So naturally Trump, the titular head of the MAGA Party, chose this moment to announce his decision to run for 2024.
Nate Cohn of the New York Times reports today, “Overall, (Trump’s) preferred primary candidates underperformed other G.O.P. candidates by about five percentage points.”
There is a level of panic among the Republican elite.
To many MAGAs, Florida’s Ron DeSantis is looking pretty good right now.
As political positions go DeSantis is Trump with a better haircut.
And no-one should forget that according the the pollsters and pundits Trump was never going to get the 2016 Republican nomination in the first place.
He’s a master at defying conventional wisdom.
Yes, the Republicans are showing divisions. But the divisions are more about style than anything else.
Also remember in 2016, even as Trump assaulted his opponents like Rubio, Christie and Cruz, they all fell into line when he won.
By the way, this seems true about the Chicago race for mayor where multiple candidates considered Progressives are lining up to run against a Black, lesbian, progressive mayor.
How do they differ with each other or with the current Mayor Lori Lightfoot?
I see no substance here. The main attack line is that Lightfoot doesn’t play well with others.
But the others include Eddie Burke, Anthony Beale and Ray Lopez.
I’m glad she has no patience for that bunch.
The national Democrats also engage in this circular firing squad.
It often appears that the centrist leadership of the Democrats aim more of their fire at the Progressives than at the MAGAs.
Whether it is Trump, DeSantis or some other MAGA, my concern is the centrist Dems will lose sight of the danger they continue to represent and that they continue to go after the Left in the Party.
And as the Republicans learned last week, that’s a playbook for defeat.
Glad to see your art online!--Paul
