Gaza, Ukraine and the hypocrisy of the West.
The wars in Ukraine and the Middle East sharply bring into focus the hypocrisy of the administration, the United States and the West.
Even some of my friends on the Left have nothing but praise for the United States pouring billions of dollars and weapons for Ukraine to fight the Russians in what is described as their fight for self-determination and democracy.
I have been skeptical.
After all, it had only been a brief moment since the U.S. left Afghanistan and was defeated in Iraq when it thrust itself into the war in Ukraine. I had little confidence in the idea that the United States was fighting for these high minded principles.
I suspect that what Biden and the United States are really up to is an attempt to reassert themselves as a single superpower and oppose the development of a multi-polar world.
I see the Ukraine war as a proxy war between big powers.
It appears that many of the nations of the Global South suspect the same thing. Most have resisted the United States’ attempts at rallying their support for the Ukraine.
Or for Israel’s genocidal attack on Gaza.
On the one hand the United States condemns Russian rockets on Ukraine cities and civilian populations.
On the other hand Israel has the full endorsement of the United States when it does the same to civilians in Gaza and the West Bank.
Of course, attacks on civilians is a war crime.
The U.S. applauds Ukrainians who defend their land, but label the Palestinians fighting against Israel as “terrorists”.
U.S. condemnations are very selective.
