DeSantis' human trafficking paid for with Covid relief money.

Nobody in our city should be tricked into abandoning our support and belief in our sanctuary city status by the manipulations of Florida’s Ron DeSantis, Texas’ Gregg Abbott or the big money MAGAs that fund them.

Yesterday California's attorney general announced he is investigating the arrival of 16 refugees that were dropped off at a Catholic church in Sacramento, including possible ties to the Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis administration.

The migrants carried paperwork that showed Florida's emergency division, as well as contractor Vertol Systems Company, administered the travel.

When Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration needed a company it could trust to carry out a controversial program to transport migrants to other states, it chose an unusual option. Although Destin-based Vertol Systems Company is in aviation, its primary business is training pilots for the military and providing helicopters across the globe. But the company was familiar to a key member of the DeSantis administration: Larry Keefe, the state’s “public safety czar” responsible for carrying out the governor’s anti-immigration programs. The company also has a private jet that flew from Florida to San Antonio a week before charter flights took 48 migrants to Martha’s Vineyard.

So far, Keefe’s ties to Vertol Systems are the best explanation of why the state hired the company. The DeSantis administration has disclosed few details about the secretive program, which is being paid for with $12 million in interest earned from federal COVID relief money. State officials haven’t said how they chose Vertol Systems, whether the state solicited multiple bids for the work as required by the Legislature, or even released the state’s contract with the company.

The refugees from Colombia and Venezuel were approached by a private contractor in El Paso, Texas, according to the Associated Press. The contractor said they'd help the refugees with transportation to their final destination, and to help them secure jobs and shelter.

None of the promises were kept.

This is a common trick of human traffickers.

DeSantis previously acknowledged his administration orchestrated another plane carrying migrants from San Antonio, Texas, to Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts.

He frequently boasts about these actions in speeches, including on the 2024 presidential campaign trail.

Sickening.
