If the Democrats nominate Joe Biden for president in 2024 they’re nuts.
Nothing demonstrates this more than his response to the Supreme Court’s recent rulings, from separation of church and state, to gun ownership to the rolling back of 50 years of reproductive rights and the rights of women as equal citizens.
When the eventual ruling of the Court was leaked months ago, Senators Elizabeth Warren, Minnesota’s Senator Tina Smith (who replaced Al Franken), Washington’s Senator Patty Murray plus half the Senate Democratic Caucus, sent a letter to President Biden outlining executive actions he could take to defend reproductive freedom.
In response he did nothing.
The President fiddles and the threat to those seeking to end a pregnancy in half the states face a personal, possibly terminal, health crisis.
In an op-ed piece in the NY Times, Warren and Smith write:
In order to fix the damage Republicans have done to our system in their efforts to control women’s lives, we need broad democracy reform: changing the composition of the courts, reforming Senate rules like the filibuster, and even fixing the outdated Electoral College that allowed presidential candidates who lost the popular vote to take office and nominate five of the justices who agreed to end the right to an abortion.
The Court’s decision is as contrary to democracy and as illegitmate as Plessy vs Ferguson.
There is no place at no time in the duration of a pregnancy for the role of the government. It is a Medical decision to be made only between a person and their doctor.
Not by politicians or judges.
The fact is that the Court itself is illegitimate when the anti-democratic majority was put in place by an insurrectionist president and approved by his co-conspirators in Congress.
The Court’s decision should be defied where is can be and resisted everywhere.
And the Democrats need to replace Joe Biden in ‘24.
