We are away from Chicago for a few days to be with family on the north fork of Long Island.
Locals tell me that these have been the first three perfect weather days this summer.
Sitting by the dock of the bay it is hard to wrap my head around the daily gun violence that characterizes America right now.
The leading cause of death among children is gun violence.
Just writing those words sickens me.
I’m writing a quick note that there is a bill in the Illinois House to ban assault weapons in Illinois.
Don’t tell me it won’t solve the problem of gun violence.
We all know that.
Illinois should ban assault weapons.
Governor Pritzker has said that he is calling a special session of the legislature to strengthen our laws protecting abortion.
The legislature could pass the assault weapons ban at the same time.
HB5522
While Congress recently enacted some way too modest gun violence prevention legislation, much more is needed.
Of course, there is no wall at the Illinois border to keep assault weapons out of the state.
Yet it is crazy that anyone should own one.
