AIPAC spends 7 million dollars to buy a congressional seat in Maryland.
In Chicago congressional race, Casten returned AIPAC money.
It appears that Israel and their right-wing supporters in the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) won a congressional seat in Maryland’s Democratic Party primary Tuesday.
Two candidates, Glenn Ivey and Donna Edwards were competing for an open seat in Maryland’s 4th Congressional District.
The winner will surely be elected in November.
The district includes most of the majority-black precincts on the Maryland side of D.C. metro. The district is concentrated in Prince George's County. The district has the highest median household income of any majority-black congressional district in the United States. It is the most Democratic district in Maryland.
Both candidates agree on most issues, except one.
Donna Edwards did no toe the line on support for Israel.
“AIPAC’s opposition to Edwards dates to 2009, in her first term, when she voted “present” on a resolution to support Israel’s right to defend itself against attacks from Gaza,” reports the Washington Post.
Jeez. It doesn’t take much to piss off AIPAC.
To punish Edwards for her heresy, AIPAC’s political arm gave Ivy’s campaign $6 million.
Other AIPAC donors gave Ivy a million more.
That is a huge amount of money for a congressional race.
It was enough.
Ivy got 51% of the vote.
Although the election was a Democratic Party primary, lots of AIPAC’s political action money comes from right-wing Republican’s and Christian Right donors.
In the Illinois 6th there was a race between two Democrats for a newly drawn district. It pitted Sean Casten against Marie Newman, both incumbent members of Congress
I liked Newman who won two years ago against the worst Democrat in Congress, Dan Lipinski, in the old 3rd Congressional District.
Marie was a consistent supporter of Palestinians, many of whom lived in the district.
When the Party bosses drew new district lines they put Newman in the same District as Sean Casten hoping they could get rid of Newman who identified with The Squad.
And AIPAC saw an opportunity with Casten.
That proved incorrect.
Casten won the primary but rejected AIPAC money.
In a sign that the conservative pro-Israel groups that backed his campaign may have made a risky bet, Federal Election Commission records show Illinois Rep. Sean Casten, who recently ousted left-wing colleague Marie Newman in a heated primary, returned nearly $50,000 in contributions from donors of Pro-Israel America PAC.
The donations were returned after Casten took actions at odds with Washington’s overwhelming right-leaning pro-Israel consensus. (The Intercept)
