Abortion rights and coup attempts.
The Supreme Court's decision on Roe is one part of the rolling coup d'etat.
Perhaps it is the fact that I’m 74 now and have personal memories of the days before Roe.
Of course I knew this would happen.
We all knew.
But I remember.
Of friends, dear friends, whose abortions were as dangerous as they were illegal and traumatic.
So, I’m still really pissed.
We watched The Janes the other night, a documentary on HBO, that told the story of brave women in Chicago who provided safe illegal abortions to those who needed them.
They were heroic women who risked their own freedom to provide other women what is every woman’s right to have: Control over their own reproductive choices. No exceptions. On demand.
I don’t have to argue reproductive rights here. I expect we are in agreement about this.
If not, fuck off.
Like The Janes, who took inspiration and courage from the mass movements, the Civil Rights Movement, the anti-war movements and other movements, the wretched six members of the Court must face a push back of massive proportions.
In the streets. In the voting booth. Across your neighbors fence or in the apartment hallway.
This morning I was thinking about the January 6th Select Committee hearing that I watched yesterday.
The news flashed on my phone that the Court had ruled against women.
The hearing yesterday focused on Trump’s role and his attempt to use his Department of Justice to facilitate the coup d’etat.
Backed by the thugs in the Poor Boys along with members of congress who would later seek prison pardons, Trump was attempting to block the peaceful transfer of power.
Those testifying were all Trump men. They were all higher up in the DOJ and had refused Trump’s order to switch electors.
The same men, by the way, who had no problem with putting little children in cages.
But we will save that for a later day.
Finally, on the day of January 6th preserving the institution was more important to them and enough was enough.
It feels like the Supreme Court decision overturning 50 years of an established right of women is part of a what seems like a continuing rolling coup.
The stage of the coup that was meant to stop the count on January 6th failed.
The coup d’etat is not finished.
It was Republican Illinois Congressman Adam Kinzinger who summed up yesterday’s hearing by warning that the coup attempt was not over.
They have the Court.
Check.
In January they may have Congress.
Check.
In 2024 Trump or a Trump clone can win back the White House.
They have made their agenda clear.
Massive resistance is all we have.
